Hartwick Huskys claim second at Nationals
by Alison Nesteby
Lots of hard work and dedication has paid off for the Hartwick Huskys ski team. This past weekend, the team traveled to Warsaw, Ind., for a national ski team competition, and returned home with a second place finish and many pride-filled smiles.
Five members of the Huskys returned home with National Champion medals in individual categories. Mitch Tanner, Chad Rowray, Ron Klinger and brothers Paul and Doug Bauers were named National Champions for Best Ski Jump Team.
Paul Bauers was named Most Valuable Skier for the entire competition, which consisted of seven teams from across the nation.

Albert Holcomb, owner of Camp O Beach Resort, does a flip on a wakeboard while practicing for the National Ski Competition held in Indiana this past weekend. Doug Bauers and Mitch Tanner (outsides) do turnarounds while Paul Bauers flips off the jump, an act that helped earn them a Best Ski Jump Team National Championship this past weekend.
The Huskys also took honors of Highest Scoring Act for a portion of their show, which was Las Vegas themed.
Division 2 ski competitions began in 2001 and the Hartwick Huskys are the only team to have attended every National Competition. They took fourth in 2007.
On July 26, the team competed in the Regional Competition held in Waterloo. The Huskys claimed second place at that competition as well, while taking first for Best Jump Act, Best Overall Act and Best Towboat Driving.
The Huskys are funded completely by sponsorships and donations. Just this summer, the team purchased a new ski boat with three 150 horsepower Mercury motors. This boat purchase was made partly possible by an anonymous donor.
A final home ski show will be held on Aug. 23 starting after the homemade boat races, which begin at noon. Shows are held on Lake Delhi, just down river from Camp O Beach Resort.
The Hartwick Huskys ski team has been in operation for 43 years. Without the hard work and dedication of volunteers and sponsors, the Huskys would not be able to operate.
Volunteers are always needed and welcome for all aspects of the ski team (skiers, boat drivers, dock hands, costume design, set design, etc.). If you are interested in helping the Hartwick Huskys, contact Marty Pottebaum at 563.920.9195 or Dave Spaw at 563.920.3047.
